Tanzania’s education system consists of seven levels: pre-primary, primary, secondary, advanced secondary, tertiary, university, and vocational education and training.

What is the Pre-primary Level?
The pre-primary level caters to children aged 3 to 5 years. It is not compulsory, but it provides a foundation for primary education.
What is the Primary Level?
The primary level lasts for seven years, from Standard 1 to Standard 7. It is compulsory and free for all children aged 6 to 13 years. The curriculum includes subjects such as English, Swahili, mathematics, science, social studies, and physical education.
What is the Secondary Level?
The secondary level consists of two cycles:
-
Ordinary Level (O-Level): This cycle lasts for four years and covers Standard 8 to Standard 11. O-Level is compulsory for all students who have completed primary education. Students study a broad range of subjects, including English, Swahili, mathematics, science, social studies, and electives.
-
Advanced Secondary Level (A-Level): This cycle lasts for two years and covers Standard 12 and Standard 13. A-Level is not compulsory, but it is required for students who wish to pursue higher education. Students specialize in a few subjects, such as mathematics, science, or humanities.
What is the Advanced Secondary Level?
The advanced secondary level is optional and lasts for two years, from Form 5 to Form 6. It prepares students for university or vocational training.
What is the Tertiary Level?
The tertiary level includes universities, colleges, and vocational training institutions. It offers a wide range of programs, such as bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and doctorates.
What is the University Level?
The university level comprises universities and research institutions. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in a variety of disciplines, including arts, sciences, engineering, and medicine.
What is the Vocational Education and Training Level?
Vocational education and training (VET) provides practical skills and knowledge for specific occupations. It is offered at colleges, vocational training centers, and apprenticeship programs.
